Paco Limon is going to make 2009 his baby-mama!
Magnificent Bastard has a discussion with Paco Limon about the future of . . . Paco Limon.
Magnificent Bastard sez:
Have I made it perfectly clear to you all that I am madly and deeply in love with Doctor Infierno? I actually find myself going back and re-watching it, just to make sure it holds up, that I’m not building it up in my head bigger and better than it actually was. And every time I watch it, I love it just a little bit more. So there you have it. By far the best debut film I’ve seen all year. And though many people invested lots of blood, sweat, and tears into the project, I think it’s safe to say nothing would have happened were it not for the director, Paco Limon. I decided there was no better way to start 2009 than to have a chat with Paco, see what projects he’s working on, and find out if, and hopefully when, you’ll be able to get a copy of Doctor Infierno for your very own. I spent the better part of an hour talking to Paco, and I got so much cool info I don’t even know where to start.
Paco’s next film will most likely actually be four films. He’s working on a series of four short films, each of which will be a stand-alone story. Once all of them are completed (and most likely have been shown as short films) he’ll edit them together into a single film that will expose the unifying thread between the shorts and add layers of meaning. If that’s not cool enough for you, each short film will be done as a sort of thematic homage to a different film genre. He’s written the “SuperHero Black Comedy” and the “Hong Kong Action film”, and is working on the “Post-Disaster Zombie film”. What’s the fourth one? I can’t tell you, because he wouldn’t even tell me. All he would say is it’s a surprise . . . and then he laughed maniacally. Good enough for me!
He’s not content to work on a single project at once, though. He’s also writing a feature in partnership with Jorge Gallego, who you should remember as “Sacha” (the guy who has sex with the corpse) in Doctor Infierno. This film is going to combine (and I quote) “Lovecraft, social drama, and ultra-gore black comedy of superheroes”. Did you get that? A maniac superhero movie with elements of social drama exploring the plight of the poor . . . and Lovecraft demons. I’m not sure how in the world that’s going to work, but with Paco behind it, I’ll be first in line when it comes out.
The CyberMonkey elders always told me things come in threes, and that’s the case here too. Paco is working on yet another project. And if it’s at all possible, it could be even better than the first two I’ve mentioned. But I’m sworn to secrecy . . . for now. I promise I’ll tell you as soon as he lets me. For now, you’ll just have to take me at my CyberMonkey word that it’s got the potential to be magnificent. And if anyone knows magnificence, it’s me!
And all that leaves us is . . . the possible DVD release of Doctor Infierno. If you’ve got a region free DVD player, or you live in Europe, you’re about to be in luck. Paco is about to sign the papers on a deal to release the DVD in Spain. For those of you in the USA without the wonders of region free technology, you may have to wait a bit longer. He is in talks with some US distributors, but it’s too soon to say what will happen. Cross your fingers, write some letters, call your Congress person, shout it from the rooftops – you want this DVD to be released. And you will buy it. Oh yes you will. Consider that an order from Horatio Hell, MD.
And from me, Magnificent Bastard.
Did I say that was all? I guess I spoke too soon. The votes have been tallied on our first ever CyberMonkeyDeathSquad awards (lovingly named “The Magnum”), and it seems that Paco’s name was mentioned a few times. Runner Up for Best Director of 2008? Paco Limon. Runner Up for Best Fight Coordination/Choreography? Doctor Infierno. Fan Choice for Best Film Overall? A tie between Wall-E and Doctor Infierno. And the Magnum award for Best Debut Film for a Director? Paco Limon for Doctor Infierno. Congratulations to Paco Limon and everyone else at Melenoma Films!
